Periodontal Dentistry in Albany Park, Chicago & Des Plaines, IL

If you have been diagnosed with periodontal (gum) disease, your periodontal dentist might recommend periodontal surgery. The purpose of periodontal surgery is to remove the disease to improve your oral health. Let’s look at three different types of periodontal surgery:

  1. Gingival Flap Surgery –  If pockets are greater than 5 millimeters in depth, the procedure would be performed to reduce the periodontal pockets. Gum tissue will be cut from the teeth to conduct a thorough deep cleaning.
  2. Gingivectomy – This type of periodontal surgery will be conducted to remove excess gum tissue that may be overgrown on the teeth. In doing so, it can provide a better area to clean the teeth.
  3. Gingivoplasty – Lastly, this next periodontal surgery reshapes the healthy gum tissue. If someone has tooth recession where the gum is pushed away from the tooth, gingivoplasty can also be performed.

After the periodontal surgery is performed, it is important to properly clean the teeth and gum tissue with a toothbrush and an antimicrobial mouth rinse.
